Goals

 

Goal #1

Merritt Academy will promote academic excellence for all students in the core curriculum of math, language arts/reading, social studies and science.

Strategies:

  • Maintain high expectations and performance standards
  • Motivate students to attain mastery in the core curriculum areas
  • Develop an educational team who will utilize innovative and research-based methodologies for teaching
  • Develop programs to support and challenge each student
  • Develop academic co-curricular programs/activities to support and challenge each student
  • An academic excellence committee will oversee the selection of quality textbooks and materials
Assessments:
  • Michigan Education Assessment Program (M.E.A.P.)
  • Comprehensive Test of Basic Subjects (C.T.B.S.)
  • Portfolio assessment
  • Analyze student Grade Point Average
  • Chapter/Unit Tests
  • Progress Reports ( Report card and written reports to parents)
  • Teacher observations

 

Goal #2

Merritt Academy will help each student discover and develop his/her unique gifts, talents and abilities

Strategies:

  • Maintain class size of 24 students
  • Utilize teaching methods that encourage imagination and creativity
  • Create an environment in which each student can discover and develop his/her unique gifts, talents and abilities
  • Select and train staff who will help each individual student recognize and attain his/her highest potential
Assessments:
  • Portfolio assessment
  • Teacher observations
  • Report Cards/Progress Report
  • Standardized assessments measuring abilities/interests
  • Curricular and co-curricular competitions
  • Monitor curriculum offerings and student schedules

 

Goal #3

Merritt Academy will encourage exemplary character development in each student.

Strategies:

  • Select texts and resources that reflect positive character attributes
  • Establish standards of conduct and discipline for the Board of Directors, faculty, staff and students
  • Recognize and reward expressions of positive character
  • Teach and model exemplary character qualities such as honesty, integrity, respect, courage, loyalty, etc.
  • Promote positive interpersonal relationships and communication skills
Assessments:
  • Monitor behavior problem referrals
  • Teacher observations
  • Student surveys
  • Monitor positive behavior
  • Measure staff and student understanding of exemplary character qualities

 

Goal #4

Merritt Academy will prepare students to become productive citizens and community leaders.

Strategies:

  • Maintain high expectations and performance standards
  • Model and teach the positive values of traditional moral and ethical standards
  • Promote community volunteerism
  • Utilize community and business resources
Assessments:
  • Written evaluations of academic progress
  • Measure student involvement in co-curricular activities
  • Monitor student involvement in volunteerism
  • Evaluate use of outside community resources
  • Teacher observations

 

Goal #5

Merritt Academy will prepare students to become productive citizens and community leaders.

Strategies:

  • Expose students to state of the art technology
  • Provide students with access to and instruction in the use of state of the art equipment
  • Provide the services of a multi-media resource person
  • Provide training for the faculty in the use of multi-media resources
Assessments:
  • Monitor curriculum offerings and student course selections
  • Teacher observations
  • Measure teacher understanding and proficiency in use of technology
  • Measure student understanding and proficiency in use of technology
  • Monitor use of community and/or business resources

 

Goal #6

Merritt Academy will encourage the development of cooperative relationships with parents and the community

Strategies:

  • Develop a mentoring program
  • Promote parent-school interaction
  • Develop a community information network using a variety of media
  • Promote community volunteerism
  • Develop business partnerships to promote entrepeneurism
Assessments:
  • Monitor parent attendance at school activities, programs, meetings and conferences
  • Meetings/conferences
