The Board of Directors of Merritt Academy is the legal entity for the academy. They oversee the academy as the policy-making body but do not micro manage the school. The principal is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school under the direction of the board and management company.

The principal, teachers, and staff are employees of The Romine Group, LLC. All employees and the management company are under the authority of the Board of Directors.

None of the board members has a financial interest in the school, nor are any of the members of the team related to one another.

Jean Dery has been on the Merritt Academy School Board since 2016. She previously was employed as a teacher at Merritt from 2004-2015 and retired early to assist in taking care of her mother and family. Jean enjoyed her time immensely at Merritt and wanted to continue to be a part of the Merritt family and is doing so with her service on the school board. Her mission is to ensure that the academy maintains its high standards of excellence, that policy decisions are made in accordance with the best interest of the student and staff in mind, and that the budget reflects that revenues are allocated towards student growth and academic success. Jean has been married to her husband, Mike, for 37 years. They have three adult children and eight grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing some golf, volunteering with different organizations, and is in the process of forming a nonprofit that will extend gifts of hope to cancer patients.

I have been on the board of Directors of Merritt for 15 years. I have three grown boys and Mark and I have been together for 12 years. I have retired after 35 yrs of banking . I have two grandchildren that attend Merritt. Academy. I am very involved in family life and very active in cornhole and gun clubs. I enjoy working with administration and staff at Merritt .

Michael Broyles is a married (more than 30 years) father of four (daughters). The three eldest graduated from Merritt Academy in 2017, 2020, and 2023. The youngest currently attends Merritt Academy High School. Michael has worked for Macomb Community College as a Professor of History for more than 20 years and previously worked for several Metro Detroit School Districts as a high school teacher. At Merritt Academy, Michael volunteers his time making History presentations to all grade levels, basically whenever asked by the Merritt Teachers. Previously, Michael served as an assistant coach for Merritt’s Robotics team, the Cyberstangs, during the teams first five years in existence. Michael and his family (when they are around) have resided in Chesterfield for the last 20 years. This is Michael’s first involvement as a member of a board and he looks forward to learning how the governance process works from this new vantage point.
